THE FATAL ATTRACTION - PORSCHE CARRERA GT
PORSCHE CARRERA GT
The Car in which our beloved paul walker died, yes we are
talking about Porsche’s one the greatest cars ever – The Carrera GT. It’s mind
blowing engine and F1 car like sound clearly revs one’s heart. The Carrera GT
is one of the cars which redefined super car history. It is still called one of
the most successful supercars in history. It has won several awards too. Sports
Car International named the Carrera GT number one on its list of Top Sports
Cars of the 2000s, and number eight on Top Sports Cars of All Time list for its
ahead of time technology. But some say it one the most difficult cars to drive.
The Carrera GT has one of the most notoriously difficult clutches of any
production car. It is because it was world’s first ceramic clutch or PCCC (Porsche Carbon Ceramic
Clutch) – we can blame to the first time. The Carrera GT quickly developed a reputation
as a car for skilled drivers only, Patrick George, of the auto enthusiast
website Jalopnik, tells THR. Jeremy Clarkson, the host of BBC's Top Gear, once
described its handling as "knife edge" and that if the driver makes a
mistake, "It bites your head off”.
The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7 litre V10 engine
producing 612 hp, whereas the original concept car featured a 5.5 litre version
rated at 558 hp. It can drive from 0-100kmph in just 3.5 seconds and can reach
a top speed of 330 kmph (205 mph). A
traditional six-speed manual transmission is the only available transmission
for GT. Fitted with Porsche's latest Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide
(C/SiC) ceramic composite brake system, the 15-inch (380 mm) SGL Carbon disc
brakes make an impressive appearance underneath the 19 inch front and 20 inch
rear wheels. Similar to other Porsche models, such as the 911, the GT includes
an automated rear wing spoiler which deploys above 70 mph (110 km/h). The Carrera GT is the first production car to
utilize a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque chassis. Much of the
body of GT is also made of carbon fibre. A total of 1270 Carrera GTs were made
and sold. It costs around US$ 450,000.
INTERIOR
The Carrera GT has a traditional soft brown leather interior
with shift knob made of birch and ash to pay homage to the balsa wood shift
knob used in the 917. The wood is lighter than aluminum and does not conduct
drivetrain heat like most metals. This was especially important to 917 drivers,
as there were issues with shift knobs burning hands with conventional
materials. Bose audio system and a navigation system were standard. In typical
Porsche fashion, the ignition is to the left of the steering wheel.
